Our Story
Lucknow Gold Hazelnuts
Gold was discovered at Lucknow when two local farmers found surface gold at the top of a hill 1851. The area was so rich in gold that incredibly it was found in the roots of grass, and so became the site of Lucknow's Phoenix Mine.
Lucknow Gold Hazelnuts are grown on the same property that was mined all those years ago, with healthy sustainably grown trees now producing more gold nuggets; - little nuggets of tasty natures own gold, hazelnuts.
The grove of 800 hazelnut trees was carefully planned and planted in 2003, with a selection of nut bearing and pollenising trees.
Sadly during the drought a subsequent owner decimated the orchard for stock feed, hence we had a lot of branches to pick up and the trees suffered considerable structural damage and sunburn. However, they are an ancient, tough and resilient tree so are recovering remarkably well.
At the roots of Lucknow Gold Hazelnuts is fertile volcanic basalt soil, and a local family farm considerately managing angus cattle, sheep and fresh sustainably grown hazelnuts.
Our story is one of dedication to quality, sustainability, and the love for our land. Unlike many, we do not use defoliants, insecticides or herbicides in our orchard.
